The Ladies Benevolent Society was founded in 1884 to organize community efforts toward the establishment of a home of orphans. It was incorporated in 1886, and reincorporated in 1896. Until its closure in 1950, it offered shelter to orphans, to children whose parents could not care for them, and coordinated adoptions services and social casework.
